To Kill A Mockingbirdis a great story. The story is set in 1930s Maycomb, Alabama, and is told by Scout Finch. In it, she looks back to her childhood, between the ages of six and nine years. A lively, intelligent and fiercely loyal child, she has one older brother called Jem, whose main interest is football. Despite an age difference of nearly four years, the siblings are clearly very close. Their mother died when Scout was two and they have been brought up by their father, Atticus - who proves to be a man you can't help admiring. Calpurnia, their housekeeper, seems to have been a great help to Atticus in raising the children. At times, Scout seems to have seen her as something of an adversary, though they become much closer as time goes on. Among their neighbours are the mysterious Radleys - Mr. Arthur, better known as Boo Radley, hasn't been seen outside for many years. He has become something of a legend that inspires a certain amount of fear among the children. Another neighbour, Miss Maudie, is an entirely different proposition - a very likeable character, she proves to be a very good friend to the children and one of Maycomb's more admirable residents.

Another of the children's friends in Chet Baker Harris, a boy from Mississippi who is better known as Dill. He spends his summer with his Aunt Rachel, another of Scout's neighbours. Dill is the driving force behind one of the book's major themes : the quest to make Boo Radley come outside. The other theme, however, is a lot more serious - it deals with a court case where a black man has been charged with raping a white woman, on very flimsy evidence. The attitude of many of the townsfolk to the man in question, and to the black community in general, confuse the children greatly. The consequences of these attitudes have a direct impact on the Finch family, given that Atticus has been appointed the defence attorney.

A Thousand Splendid Suns 0 comments

After 103 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and with four million copies of The Kite Runner shipped, Khaled Hosseini returns with a beautiful, riveting, and haunting novel that confirms his place as one of the most important literary writers today.

Propelled by the same superb instinct for storytelling that made The Kite Runner a beloved classic, A Thousand Splendid Sunsis at once an incredible chronicle of thirty years of Afghan history and a deeply moving story of family, friendship, faith, and the salvation to be found in love.

Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them-in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul-they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation. With heart-wrenching power and suspense, Hosseini shows how a woman's love for her family can move her to shocking and heroic acts of self-sacrifice, and that in the end it is love, or even the memory of love, that is often the key to survival.

A stunning accomplishment, A Thousand Splendid Sunsis a haunting, heartbreaking, compelling story of an unforgiving time, an unlikely friendship, and an indestructible love.

The Kite Runner 0 comments

In the book, the protagonist, Amir, learns the importance of loyalty and trust. Growing up in antebellum Afghanistan, he lives with his father and their two Hazra servants. The younger of the two, Hassan, is Amir’s best friend throughout his childhood. One day, Hassan gets into a fight with a bellicose, rebellious boy who is twice his age. Amir secretly witnesses the ordeal and does not stand up for Hassan, who badly needs his assistance. As a result of his cowardice, Amir has to live with the remorse of letting Hassan down until he is granted an opportunity to, “be good again”(192). Many years later, while Afghanistan is immersed in constant fighting, Amir’s father’s old business partner, Rahim Khan, calls him back to Afghanistan to complete a very perilous task. On the phone, Rahim Khan explains to Amir that he is very sick and requires his presence immediately. In Afghanistan, Rahim Khan sends Amir to rescue Hassan’s only son from the clutches of a rampant talib. This journey proves to be perilous for both Amir and Sohrab, Hassan’s son, and Amir’s mental toughness proves to be essential to his cause.

The Kite Runneris very interesting because Amir does not represent the typical hero. Instinctively, he is not brave, courageous, strong-willed, or a domineering. Amir’s unsatisfactory characteristics are outweighed by his ability to learn from his past experiences. His willingness to recount his previous wrongdoings gives him the motivation to pursue and uphold the safety of Sohrab. The Kite Runneris an inspiring novel because it forces the reality of living in war torn Afghanistan upon the reader, who, before reading the novel, may not be able to empathize with many, if any, of the characters in the book.

The Kite Runneris an excellent book for any reader who wishes to broaden their understanding of their life’s purpose. This novel will show its readers how they may interpret the meaning of the world around them by utilizing the perspectives of others. Anyone who enjoys reading adventurous, suspenseful, and fulfilling books will be satisfied after reading The Kite Runner.
